Traffic safety involves a shared responsibility on a variety of issues. Much more than following the speed limit, traffic safety includes attention to a variety of topics and settings. Traffic safety does include obeying laws on the highways, for automobiles, trucks and other vehicles. It also includes attention to pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, mopeds and other forms of transportation.

Further, a comprehensive look at traffic safety examines human factors (such as being distracted, impaired or drowsy), driving behaviors (such as courteous, defensive, and aggressive driving), proper use of safety devices (such as safety belts and child safety seats), and age and experience (such as a young novice driver and a mature driver). Traffic safety can be undertaken by individuals as they examine their own or others’ behaviors; it can also be undertaken by organizations, businesses and agencies as they promote safer highway and related settings.

George Mason University’s Center for the Advancement of Public Health (GMU’s CAPH) is actively involved in researching, synthesizing and promoting a wide range of traffic safety issues. GMU’s CAPH traffic safety research and resources are included on this web site; in addition, numerous other resources and materials are highlighted here, to provide easy access for personal, family or organizational use. These materials and links promote safe driving, riding and walking behaviors, and help to promote awareness of a variety of traffic safety topics from a range of perspectives. Initial funding for this site was provided by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
